{"id":392,"date":"2026-08-12T20:10:44","date_gmt":"2026-08-12T20:10:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/americanhousingtransition.com\/?p=392"},"modified":"2026-08-12T20:10:44","modified_gmt":"2026-08-12T20:10:44","slug":"former-splc-finance-officer-arrested-on-fraud-charges-over-payments-to-white-supremacist-informants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/americanhousingtransition.com\/?p=392","title":{"rendered":"Former SPLC Finance Officer Arrested on Fraud Charges over Payments to White Supremacist Informants"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span>A former chief financial officer for the Southern Poverty Law Center who was tasked with overseeing the group\u2019s controversial project tracking \u201chate groups\u201d in the U.S. was arrested on Wednesday, as part of the Department of Justice\u2019s larger investigation into the SPLC.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/americanhousingtransition.com\/?p=390\">HHS Launches Civil Rights Probe into Kaiser Permanente for Allegedly Prioritizing Black Patients<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span>Heidi Beirich was arrested in California on charges that she oversaw secret payments to informants inside of white supremacist groups \u2014 including payments to an informant whom she was allegedly romantically involved with.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Prosecutors say Beirich, who has not worked at the SPLC for several years, was previously in charge of overseeing \u201cpayments of donors\u2019 money\u201d to people inside the hate groups.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>But Beirich also allegedly <span>had a romantic relationship with one informant who infiltrated a white supremacist group and stole documents for the SPLC, according to the indictment. The pair also shared a bank account, prosecutors say, which <\/span><span>included $140,000 in funds from the SPLC\u2019s payments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The SPLC paid the informant more than $1 million in total.<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI believe she was part of the effort to open bank accounts in completely fictitious companies\u2019 names and make payments to individuals for reasons that were not accurate as described,\u201d Attorney General Todd Blanche told reporters on Wednesday. \u201cThis is exactly what we said would happen in a case like this, which is that our investigators and the US attorneys and the agents working the case will keep on working it even after the initial indictment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Beirich is facing charges of\u00a0<\/span><span>wire fraud conspiracy, conspiracy to submit false statements to a federally insured bank and conspiracy to conceal money laundering.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Beirich\u2019s attorney told CNN she is \u201cinnocent\u201d and argued the case is \u201cwithout merit.\u201d He also said his client has not worked for the SPLC in more than six years.<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe believe the charges against her and the SPLC are politically motivated, and Dr. Beirich has been targeted in this case because of the important work she has done to combat hate groups and extremists,\u201d said her attorney, Michael J. Proctor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cDr. Beirich won\u2019t be silenced or intimidated by the government\u2019s false and politicized allegations now,\u201d he added. \u201cShe welcomes the opportunity to present the truth in court.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Beirich is the co-founder of the Global Project Against Hate and Extremism, according to the Associated Press, which describes her as a \u201cpolitical extremism expert.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/americanhousingtransition.com\/?p=388\">Socialist Francesca Hong Underperforms the Polls, Fights to Hang On in Wisconsin Gubernatorial Primary<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The SPLC was indicted on federal charges back in April for q<span>uietly paying more than $3 million to informants with several extremist groups. Blanche alleged at the time that the group\u00a0<\/span><span>had defrauded donors by using their money to secretly pay informants inside extremist organizations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Blanche says the SPLC was \u201cdoing the exact opposite of what it told its donors it was doing \u2014 not dismantling extremism, but funding it.\u201d He also accused the group of \u201cmanufacturing racism to justify its existence.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Charlottesville \u201cUnite the Right\u201d rally became an inciting incident for a massive rush of support for the SPLC \u2014 and prosecutors now say the group paid more than $270,000 to an informant who was a member of the leadership group that planned the event.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>One \u201cfield source\u201d for the SPLC \u201cwas a member of the online leadership chat group that planned the 2017 \u2018Unite the Right\u2019 event in Charlottesville, Virginia, and attended the event at the direction of the S.P.L.C,\u201d according to prosecutors. The antisemitic rally had hundreds of participants and saw a protester drive his car into a group of counterprotesters, killing one woman and leaving at least 19 others injured. The rally was held amid controversy over the removal of Confederate monuments, which local governments opted to take down in the wake of the Charleston church shooting.
