Senator John Fetterman (D., Pa.) is prepared to leave the Democratic Party if the left wing of the Democratic coalition is successful in pushing the party to abandon its historical support for Israel.<\/p>\n

Fetterman, who has become increasingly alienated from his party since taking office, explained in a Tuesday discussion at the Israel on Campus Coalition\u2019s (ICC) 2026 National Leadership Summit that he could no longer call himself a Democrat if the party moves to cut off U.S. aid to Israel.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve said if my party becomes an anti-Israel party, where we refuse to provide aid . . . that would be the one thing \u2014 the only thing \u2014 that would push me out of this party,\u201d Fetterman said, \u201cbecause I think it\u2019s important to have a conscience for my party.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fetterman attributes his unwavering pro-Israel stance to being \u201ca student of history.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s always been very much the moral clarity for me,\u201d he said. \u201cSo it\u2019s always been the easy choice for me to remain very firmly in that space.\u201d<\/p>\n

The senator voiced his disapproval of the party\u2019s current trajectory as he addressed the more than 800 students and 200 professionals in attendance at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Washington.<\/p>\n

Fetterman\u2019s party is rapidly moving toward what he identified as a breaking point: Nearly half of all House Democrats voted last week in favor of a resolution that would have cut off all $3.3 billion in U.S. military and humanitarian aid to Israel. His speech came hours before far-left public health official Abdul El-Sayed bested the more moderate Congresswoman Haley Stevens in Michigan\u2019s Democratic Senate primary. El-Sayed made opposition to Israel a focal point in his campaign, constantly attacking Stevens for accepting money from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee and railing against continued U.S. aid to Israel. He also refused throughout the campaign to recognize Israel\u2019s right to exist as an explicitly Jewish nation.<\/p>\n

El-Sayed campaigned alongside the country\u2019s most prominent socialists, such as Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Bernie Sanders. He joins a new crop of socialist candidates who recently prevailed over establishment Democrats in primaries in New York and Colorado.<\/p>\n

Predicting El-Sayed\u2019s victory, Fetterman said he is \u201cincredibly disappointed\u201d in his party but not surprised.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have very important primaries happening right now in Michigan,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd where we expect how that\u2019s going to probably go \u2014 that\u2019s a very sad statement of where the Democratic Party is, where I will always refuse to be.\u201d<\/p>\n

Referencing DSA members liking social media posts celebrating Hamas, Iran, and the October 7 massacre, Fetterman asserted that they have already \u201cmarginalized\u201d themselves and should form their own separate party.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, Fetterman acknowledged that, within the current Democratic Party, \u201cthese are the kind of people that are winning these elections.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the face of these shifts, however, he assured listeners that he would never be a Democrat who skirts around the question of supporting Israel. He called it a \u201cbetrayal\u201d of the party\u2019s values.<\/p>\n

He referenced Jewish organizations like J Street that have \u201cmade it possible for Democrats to vote against Iron Dome funding,\u201d saying, \u201cThat\u2019s lunacy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve visited Israel,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019ve seen those batteries \u2014 purely, purely defensive, purely defensive system \u2014 why would you support [defunding] that?\u201d<\/p>\n

Fetterman blames social media for propagating misinformation that plays to the preferred anti-Israel narrative. \u201cIf you get your history degree from Professor TikTok, it\u2019s pretty sure that you have adopted these extreme views that blame Israel,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Fetterman has pictures of all the hostages outside of his office. \u201cThey\u2019re always gonna stay in my office until every last person\u2019s back home,\u201d he said. Considering that the remaining 20 hostages held by Hamas were released in October 2025, however, it seems the pictures are a permanent addition to his office d\u00e9cor.<\/p>\n

Fetterman, who has faced relentless protest from anti-Israel agitators, expressed solidarity with students facing a hostile climate on campus.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you feel politically homeless, specifically around this issue, I am one of you,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
