{"id":367,"date":"2026-08-04T19:37:02","date_gmt":"2026-08-04T19:37:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/americanhousingtransition.com\/?p=367"},"modified":"2026-08-04T19:37:02","modified_gmt":"2026-08-04T19:37:02","slug":"cornyn-says-he-now-opposes-scrapping-the-filibuster","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/americanhousingtransition.com\/?p=367","title":{"rendered":"Cornyn Says He Now Opposes Scrapping the Filibuster"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Senator John Cornyn of Texas said Tuesday that he does not support doing away with the filibuster, in a change from the position he adopted earlier this year while he was running for reelection.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/americanhousingtransition.com\/?p=365\">Rogers Doesn\u2019t Care Who Wins Michigan\u2019s Dem Primary: \u2018Not Much Difference\u2019 Between Stevens, El-Sayed<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In a March op-ed, Cornyn, who would go on to lose his primary to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, wrote that he supported \u201cwhatever changes to Senate rules that may prove necessary\u201d to pass the SAVE America Act, but he is now much cooler on the prospect of altering Senate rules.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<span>I<\/span> <span>said<\/span> <span>I<\/span> <span>was<\/span> <span>open<\/span> <span>to<\/span> <span>changes<\/span> <span>in<\/span> <span>the<\/span> <span>filibuster,<\/span> <span>but<\/span>\u00a0<span>I<\/span> <span>was<\/span> <span>intentionally<\/span> <span>not<\/span> <span>very<\/span> <span>specific,\u201d Cornyn told <span>National Review<\/span> of his March position.<\/span> \u201c<span>I\u2019m<\/span> <span>happy<\/span> <span>to<\/span> <span>have<\/span> <span>that<\/span> <span>conversation,<\/span> <span>but<\/span> <span>I\u2019m<\/span> <span>not<\/span> <span>prepared<\/span> <span>to<\/span> <span>vote<\/span> <span>to<\/span> <span>overturn<\/span> <span>the<\/span> <span>filibuster<\/span> <span>at<\/span> <span>this<\/span> <span>time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Cornyn\u2019s comments come as he has applied increasing pressure on President Donald Trump\u2019s administration in the aftermath of his primary loss, most recently demanding concessions to vote to advance attorney general nominee Todd Blanche out of committee.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/americanhousingtransition.com\/?p=363\">Abdul El-Sayed\u2019s Mask-On, Mask-Off Socialism<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Prior to this year, Cornyn was a staunch proponent of keeping the Senate\u2019s rules as they are. As Democrats attempted to hollow out the filibuster while they held a governing trifecta in 2022, Cornyn defended it as an institution that encourages lawmakers to \u201cdiscuss things together, to debate them, to think about the consequences, both intended and unintended, and to pass laws which will endure the test of time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That position earned Cornyn attacks during the primary from Paxton and Representative Wesley Hunt, his other primary opponent.
