As many as 60,000 illegal migrants from Africa have swarmed the Spanish territory of Ceuta after Spain\u2019s Supreme Court ruled migrants intercepted at sea while trying to reach the area cannot be kicked out.<\/span><\/p>\n

The ruling issued earlier this month \u2014 which applies to the Spanish autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla \u2014 said<\/span> the migrants cannot be expelled under the territories\u2019 special border-rejection regime.<\/span><\/p>\n

Migrants climbed over border fences or swam to the territory\u2019s shores. <\/span>At least 34 people died trying to enter Ceuta.<\/p>\n

The flood of migrants has overwhelmed the territory of Ceuta on the north African coast, which itself has a population of just 85,000.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt has been a slow trickle since the Supreme Court\u2019s ruling, but today has been an explosion,\u201d a spokesperson for Spain\u2019s Guardia Civil police told Reuters on Thursday.<\/p>\n

Spain has deployed 200 specialized police officers and 60 troops from the mainland to help Ceuta\u2019s forces manage the chaos. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro S\u00e1nchez of Spain visited Ceuta on Friday and\u00a0condemned \u201cmafias involved in human trafficking that deceive many young people, many of whom ultimately lose their lives.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

President Trump called the situation \u201cterrible\u201d and predicted that the same situation may play out in the U.S. if a Democratic president is elected in 2028.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s terrible. Remember that picture. That\u2019s going to be us in three years if the wrong side gets in,\u201d Trump told a Fox News reporter on Friday. \u201cIf the Democrats get in, you will not live a very good life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ceuta\u2019s mayor-president, Juan Jes\u00fas Vivas, called the situation \u201cabsolutely unsustainable\u201d and estimated some 60,000 people had entered the territory since Thursday; Spain\u2019s interior ministry, meanwhile, put the number closer to 50,000.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, the ministry said Friday afternoon local time that more than 25,000 individuals who crossed the border have already left.<\/span><\/p>\n

Still, businesses in Ceuta have closed their doors amid what residents have called a migrant \u201capocalypse.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Migrants are sleeping in the streets and bathing in public fountains. Hundreds of men were loitering on the beach in Ceuta on Friday, while video shared by David Santos, director of La Bandera<\/em>, shows a migrant defecating on the side of a building in broad daylight.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYou ask why everyone came \u2014 because there\u2019s no work in Morocco,\u201d Ajoub el-Arrot a 24-year-old Moroccan migrant told the\u00a0New York Times.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know why they let us through,\u201d he said. \u201cThey opened the border and let everyone go by.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Local residents told media outlets they are living in fear, afraid to leave their homes.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople aren\u2019t leaving their homes, only to buy food and then return. There\u2019s a lot of uncertainty,\u201d said Sebasti\u00e1n Ant\u00f3n, a supermarket employee. <\/span>\u201cThey\u2019re buying huge amounts of food to fill their pantries as if something bad were going to happen.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Other European leaders signaled they were prepared to limit travel from Spain as the crisis unfolded.<\/p>\n

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said her country was ready \u201cto intervene with extraordinary measures to defend the borders and the safety of citizens, including the suspension of the Schengen Area with Spain,\u201d which allows\u00a0<\/span>people to travel freely between the borders of 29 European countries. Finland\u2019s interior minister Mari Rantanen suggested the rest of the EU should take a similar approach.<\/span><\/p>\n

Meloni, meanwhile, called the images from Ceuta \u201cshocking\u201d and said the situation \u201cdemonstrate[s], once again, that uncontrolled illegal immigration poses a real threat to the security of Europe\u2019s borders.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
