Welcome back to Forgotten Fact Checks. This week, we look at the unusual \u2014 but totally expected \u2014 way the New York Times <\/em>chose to mark Father\u2019s Day, and we cover more media misses.<\/p>\n

Gender Confusion and Male Postpartum Depression: Happy Father\u2019s Day from the New York Times<\/em>!<\/p>\n

For most Americans, Father\u2019s Day is about men. Most families \u2014 those that don\u2019t include any New York Times <\/em>editors \u2014 mark the occasion by giving dad the opportunity to indulge in some male behavior, playing golf, grilling, having a beer, or guiltlessly monopolizing the TV to watch a mid-season baseball game.<\/p>\n

But Times <\/em>editors are different. For them, Father\u2019s Day offers the perfect opportunity to promote gender confusion among children. This Father\u2019s Day, the Times <\/em>shared with its readers the story of a biological woman who identifies as a dad, and who has seemingly made it her child\u2019s responsibility to help her feel more comfortable in her assumed gender.<\/p>\n

Zach Ellams, who is female, authored an illustrated essay, \u201cTo My Daughter, My Gender Was Never Complicated,\u201d explaining that while Ellams had been a \u201ctrans man\u201d since she turned 18, that she \u201chad to learn how to talk about it\u201d once her daughter, Elliot, was born.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had to trust her with the most vulnerable version of myself,\u201d the writer says of her daughter.<\/p>\n

The cartoon illustrations depict the young girl telling her \u201cdad,\u201d \u201cI told my friends at school that mom made you a cake when you got your surgery.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, right. That\u2019s nice, but I don\u2019t actually tell everyone I\u2019m trans. I save that for special people,\u201d the author tells the girl.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, don\u2019t worry, I didn\u2019t tell them you were trans,\u201d the daughter says.<\/p>\n

Later illustrations depict the child saying she wants to grow a beard when she grows up. When she\u2019s told by the other children that she can\u2019t grow a beard because she\u2019s a girl, she replies, \u201cMy dad did, and he was a girl.\u201d<\/p>\n

In another panel, she earnestly asks, \u201cHow long did you have breasts for, dad?\u201d<\/p>\n

After detailing the obvious gender confusion she\u2019s instilling in her young child, the author adds, \u201cKids can accept things at face value. They can move between complex topics . . . to something absurd within moments. It\u2019s usually us adults that complicate matters.\u201d<\/p>\n

But the overarching message of the illustrated essay comes at the end, when the author explains that raising her daughter and watching her move through the world has helped her to \u201cembrace who I am.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought I was teaching Elliot how to be happy and secure. Yet all along she had been doing that for me,\u201d the author concludes.<\/p>\n

In another Father\u2019s Day article that collapses the distinction between men and women, Health and Science Reporter Pam Belluck explores the phenomenon of male postpartum depression, elevating the stories of neurotic men who have been convinced by psychologists that their struggles are valid and comparable to those of their wives who, it should be said, just gave birth<\/em>:<\/p>\n

Daniel Singley, a psychologist in San Diego who founded a therapy center for men, said depressed fathers are more prone to express aggravation, annoyance or even rage. \u201cUnder that is feeling hurt, sad, afraid, ashamed, helpless, hopeless, but what we see externally is anger and irritability,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Paternal depression may manifest in physical symptoms like muscle tension or stomach pain. And men are considered more likely to mask symptoms with behaviors that can be detrimental, including drugs, alcohol or gambling, Dr. Singley said.<\/p>\n

Dr. Fisher said some men believe they should only prioritize supporting the baby\u2019s mother\u2019s concerns over their symptoms and some have \u201ca hesitancy to admit\u201d that they are struggling.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

It has apparently not occurred to Dr. Fisher that that \u201chesitancy\u201d to make your feelings the focus when your wife is going through an incredibly trying time, both physically and mentally, is the product of healthy masculinity and is not something we should be encouraging men to do away with.<\/p>\n

Leave it to the New York Times <\/em>to use Father\u2019s Day as an opportunity to undermine the very meaning of fatherhood.<\/p>\n

Perhaps its little surprise that state lawmakers who count the paper\u2019s staff as constituents are currently engaged in an effort to reduce fathers to \u201cnon-gestating parents\u201d and mothers to \u201cgestating parent\u201d in the name of gender neutrality.<\/p>\n

Headline Fail of the Week<\/p>\n

There\u2019s been no shortage of think pieces about how, or whether, U.S. soccer fans can enjoy the World Cup while their country apparently \u201cburns down\u201d around them.<\/p>\n

The Seattle Times <\/em>joined in on the discourse this week: \u201cHow Seattleites are grappling with USA soccer fandom in Trump\u2019s America.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSome Seattle soccer fans have mixed feelings about patriotically backing the U.S. team during the FIFA Men\u2019s World Cup, given the actions of President Donald Trump,\u201d the paper explained in a post on X.<\/p>\n

One fan told the paper he was \u201cstruggling to separate his love for U.S. soccer from his negative feelings about high ticket prices, President Donald Trump\u2019s crackdown on immigrants and Trump\u2019s war with Iran, among other things.\u201d<\/p>\n
