Graham Platner, the scandal-plagued progressive veteran, will win the Democratic primary for the Maine Senate race, according to a projection by the Associated Press.<\/p>\n

Maine Governor Janet\u00a0Mills suspended her own Senate primary campaign on April 30, effectively handing the nomination to Platner.<\/span><\/p>\n

Platner has painted himself as an outsider to the Democratic establishment since his fiery campaign launch last fall. In line with those of other progressive and populist candidates, Platner\u2019s political bid has focused on working-class issues, including affordability, universal health care, and labor union relations.<\/span><\/p>\n

He will advance to face Republican incumbent Senator Susan Collins in November. Collins is seen as a moderate Republican, often crossing party lines to vote with Democrats. However, because Collins appeals to a more moderate, centrist bloc of voters, she has received backlash from her supporters on several occasions for voting with her own party, <\/span>including her vote to advance the nomination of\u00a0<\/span>Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court in 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Senate campaign has been rocked by controversies since last year. In October, CNN and several other outlets uncovered Platner\u2019s past Reddit posts and comments, which included offensive comments about police and sexual assault survivors. He\u2019s since been ensnared in a number of other scandals, including those involving his Nazi tattoo, his marital infidelity, and his past treatment of women.<\/span><\/p>\n

Platner has attributed the Reddit commentary to his struggles with PTSD following his time in Iraq and Afghanistan and has denied or dismissed the other accusations.<\/span><\/p>\n

A recent <\/span> by Tavern Research, conducted after the latest round of Platner\u2019s public embarrassments, shows that more than half of respondents felt \u201cmore negative\u201d about him after hearing of his alleged past actions and statements. However, a slim majority still favored Platner over Collins.<\/span><\/p>\n
