Scott Pelley\u2019s 37-year career with CBS News <\/span>ended<\/span> on Tuesday after the <\/span>60 Minutes<\/span><\/i> correspondent accused Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss of \u201cmurdering\u201d the newsmagazine.<\/span><\/p>\n

After a long career at CBS, Pelley\u2019s downfall came as he resisted changes by Weiss and other new leaders who sought to return an air of objectivity to the program.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYou hijacked my first meeting with staff to disparage me, my qualifications, and my intentions with remarkable incivility and contempt,\u201d wrote <\/span>60 Minutes<\/span><\/i>\u2019 new<\/span> executive producer, Nick Bilton, in Pelley\u2019s<\/span> letter of termination<\/span>. \u201cI am here to deliver first-in-class news programming, not to make headlines about newsroom drama.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Bilton, a British-American journalist with a background in film but not in television news, was appointed the newsmagazine\u2019s new executive producer on May 28. Pelley met the new hire with hostility, having been a supporter of former executive producer Tanya Simon, who was fired that<\/span> same day.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bilton\u2019s appointment was the final straw for Pelley amid a tense season at CBS as he and many of his fellow veteran reporters resisted Weiss\u2019s new aims.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c60<\/span> Minutes lost its DNA when our entire senior leadership and two of our best on-air correspondents were cruelly fired without cause,\u201d he wrote in a <\/span>letter<\/span> after being fired. \u201cGood people were silenced because they stood up for our audience. They stood for fairness against the forces of political bias; they stood for professionalism against chaos.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>For my part, new management has instructed me to inject falsehoods and bias into a politically sensitive story,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019ve been told to include assertions that are unverified.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But despite claims that she aims to shift CBS to the political right, Weiss is a self-identified \u201c<\/span>left-leaning centrist\u201d<\/span> whose stated goal is to serve the forgotten majority of Americans who are neither part of \u201can America-loathing far left\u201d nor a \u201chistory-erasing far right\u201d and have been ill-served.<\/span><\/p>\n

In attempting to achieve that mission, she set out ten \u201c<\/span>core journalistic values\u201d<\/span> when she took over the news network last year,\u00a0including the goal of holding \u201cboth American political parties to equal scrutiny\u201d and a promise to report on the world \u201cas it actually is.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

But Pelley and others at the program had gotten comfortable injecting their own left-wing biases into\u00a060 Minutes.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Pelley made clear his political positions and his distaste for President Trump on many occasions.<\/p>\n

On March 4, 2025, Pelley interviewed Marc Elias, the elections and voting rights attorney who defended the Biden administration and Democratic National Committee in lawsuits brought by President Trump over the 2020 election results. Pelley introduced the program with a statement aimed directly at the Trump administration: \u201cIt was nearly impossible to get anyone on camera for this story because of the fear now running through our system of justice,\u201d Pelley said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c[D]espite being a target,\u201d the <\/span>60 Minutes <\/span><\/i>Facebook page announced, \u201cMark Elias is still talking.\u201d Many of the network\u2019s left-wing viewers applauded Elias as a \u201chero\u201d and celebrated his \u201cvery brave 60 minutes,\u201d while critics were quick to point out the show\u2019s bias toward Democrats.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Pelley\u2019s attacks on Trump were even more direct one month prior, during a <\/span>60 Minutes <\/span><\/i>program on the dismantling of USAID. <\/span><\/p>\n

Aired on February 16, 2025, the program opened with a direct reproach of the president. \u201cIt\u2019s too soon to tell how serious President Trump is in defiance of the Constitution,\u201d Pelley said. \u201cPresidents often push limits \u2014 FDR\u2019s New Deal, for example \u2014 and voters in this last election <\/span>wanted<\/span><\/i> change. But the scope and speed of Trump\u2019s reach for power may be unprecedented.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

The program also targeted Elon Musk, accusing him of exorbitant spending and unwarranted job cuts.<\/span><\/p>\n

Following the 2024 election, Pelley\u2019s November 17, 2024, program was widely criticized for its overt rebuke of Republicans. \u201cThis past week, Republicans won the House majority and President-elect Trump made nominations to his Cabinet,\u201d he said. \u201cSome nominees appear to have no compelling qualifications other than loyalty to Trump.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

By the end of the update, his tone was outright skeptical. \u201cIt\u2019s up to the new Republican majority in the Senate to decide whether these nominees are equipped to represent the American people,\u201d he said. \u201cIt seems hard to remember when America was united.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

And in March 2025, Pelley delivered an anti-Trump commencement address at Wake Forest Academy. In it, he compared modern America to George Orwell\u2019s dystopia in <\/span>1984 <\/span><\/i>and encouraged the graduates to fight against the fear stirred up by modern American leaders.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Diversity\u2019 is now described as \u2018illegal.\u2019 \u2018Equity\u2019 is to be shunned,\u201d he said. \u201c\u2018Inclusion\u2019 is a dirty word. This is an old playbook, my friends. There is nothing new in this.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

But Pelley failed to use that same critical tone when reporting on President Biden.<\/p>\n

Following Hamas\u2019s October 7, 2023, attack on Israel, Pelley met with then-President Joe Biden during his October 15 <\/span>60 Minutes <\/span><\/i>program. \u201cRarely does a president confront so much peril; the catastrophe in Israel \u2014 the war in Ukraine \u2014 and no help from a paralyzed Congress,\u201d Pelley said, opening the program. Pelley acknowledged Biden\u2019s apparent weariness but attributed his physical exhaustion and \u201clife-long stutter\u201d to the pressure of politics.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pelley had also raised the subject of Biden\u2019s age and general exhaustion during a <\/span>60 Minutes <\/span><\/i>interview with Biden a year earlier, even going so far as to ask, \u201cHow would you say your mental focus is?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Biden\u2019s reply was indistinct. \u201cI\u2019d say it\u2019s\u2013 I think it\u2019s\u2013 I\u2013 I haven\u2019t\u2013 look, I have trouble even mentioning, even saying to myself, my own head, the number of years. I no more think of myself as being as old as I am than fly,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Pelley turned away from the opportunity to press Biden on his slowly-delivered rambling, choosing to instead move on to discuss Biden\u2019s \u201cstring of legislative successes\u201d and his approval ratings.<\/span><\/p>\n
